This week, Kid learned a bit about Puerto Rico. He was quite confused by the fact that they're US property but speak Spanish. (Welcome to the club, Kid.) We sampled some coffee, honey, and mango jelly from there. The subject inspired the increased use of Spanish and interest in the language, as well. Post cards were viewed. El Morro's purpose during war was discussed.
Kid found his Star Wars watch and (since I was wise enough to refuse to buy a watch without hands) he has been working on telling time.
Memory is a tricky thing for this child. I'm informed that this is due to Sensory Processing Disorder. Apparently, it is common for kids to remember things that really embedded themselves in their brains but these things would not be remembered by other kids (usually linked to sensory things like smells triggering a memory of a bird flying overhead from two years ago at a camp out). Yet, they really struggle to remember things that they are told daily due to the overwhelming sensory input they're receiving/experiencing. This being said, Kid decided he wanted to try to count to 100 during a drive (during which he was exhausted and trying to stay awake). He struggled with the tens during the first try but once we did it, he saw that he could use his fingers to keep track of the ten he's on. By the third try, it was a breeze. "YAY!" for happily learning tens!
We also put together our own knitting needles! Haven't had the chance to use them yet but they enjoyed making them. Using wooden dowels, wooden beads, wood glue, and sand paper, we whipped them up in no time!
