Thanks to a horrible accident a friend had with a hermit crab (who hid in a shell they thought was empty) eating their tadpoles that we'd caught for them, we learned that hermit crabs are omnivores. It seemed like a nice idea to have them over to catch frogs/toads. The majority of what we're catching/seeing are toads. The oldest found many snail shells and prompted learning about garden snails.
There was a 5 day trip to see family in Ga/Al, as well! Geographical discussions are fun with little kids. Maps interest them more when they effect the amount of time they're stuck in a car seat. Must remember this for future themes! During our trip we had a birthday party for the oldest children. The oldest received a microscope with an additional slide set and a telescope with a sky map! They were both broken out and much fun was had trying to learn how to use them. I was impressed when he assisted me in reading directions!
On our drive, we discussed our bearings and used them to determine which direction the clouds were moving. We also monitored how the clouds changed as the day progressed (and rain/storms became imminent).
No pictures this week as they all have full facial shots. I need to work on getting a good picture of the activity without a face specifically for this blog and my records. The oldest will be taking a break from "school" while he's on vacation with the great-grandparents. The preschooler will still be having educational time. I will be using this vacation to try to get some things planned out and prepared for our upcoming school year.
