The oldest spent a good bit of August with family so those days don't
count toward school. (Though, I'm not sure why. He learned a great
deal during his vacation! Many new vocabulary words like "cattle" have
been noticed. We don't live a farming lifestyle so he doesn't hear such
words on a regular basis but due to his activities while vacationing,
he heard new words and picked them up. New activities that we can't
offer him at this time. Roping cattle, for instance.) There was, of
course, a transition from vacation back into home life for him so things
were a bit stressful for a bit. Still, plenty of learning happened.

We traced our feet, cut them out, measured them with a ruler, wrote the measurements on them, and used them to measure things in the house. We then added up (with counters) the different amount of feet to find out how many inches they made.
Our first caterpillar. We spent a lot of time trying to find out what it was, exactly. Finally, we settled on Fall Webworm (moth).
There are often short lessons in history, geography, and science around here. The oldest is very interested in those subjects and loves to bounce around like mad. : )
